Summary

Behavioral research across Spain and Mexico to identify T2D management barriers for underserved communities. By understanding inhibiting and pormoting pressures, we designed a holistic care ecosystem and targeted interventions to improve treatment adherence and caregiver support.

Problem

Sanofi’s global digital healthcare team wanted to design interventions to improve the quality of life for underserved people who live with Type 2 diabetes and their caregivers. Leveraging qual and quant research across two countries (Spain and Mexico) we analysed behavioural patterns & pressures.

SAnofi2.1

Approach

Through a structured and comprehensive research approach, we targeted the Mexican and Spanish markets to begin uncovering behavioural insights that define adherence and condition management.

The team performed contextual interviews in people’s homes, uncovering a variety of promoting and inhibiting pressures that begin to bring clarity to why and how people are managing their T2D, as well as how we could best support them in the future.

Journey Map – Spain & Mexico combined

Process

The foundation of this 8-week fast-paced program was to centralise our qualitative and quantitative research methodologies around understanding behaviour of people with T2D. With this approach, we learned why people behave as they do today, to better understand how to change their behaviour tomorrow.

Sanofi Behavioural pressures

Behavioural Insights: identify influencing pressures.

The outcome of the research was synthesised on the map, generating a set of insights across a longitudinal journey that highlights behavioural patterns and opportunities for intervention. Both the journey of patients and caregivers were mapped, going through every stage of the medical condition, from prediabetes to the diagnosis to living with the condition in the long run.

Behavioural Strategy: defining the desired behavioural

Everything we create, we create to change behaviour. Aligning business needs to observable behaviours is critical and a shared definition of what it looks like when it “works” is the foundation of our process. Starting from the behaviour patterns that emerged during the research, we identified 4 archetypes. Every archetype was mapped onto a matrix in accordance with their level of motivation and access to healthcare and support.

Outcome

Based on validated behavioural insights, we generate interventions designed to change the underlying promoting and inhibiting pressures that determine behaviour.

For underserved people with Type 2 Diabetes, we imagined an holistic care ecosystem to increase access to treatment, drive the right daily decisions through a personalised approach, and support caregivers along the journey.

Moreover, the team ideated intervention concept for each of the prioritised opportunity areas. For every concept we also laid down Go-To-Market considerations takling possible parterships, business models and target audiances.
